Mixed Media Artist

About Me

San Leandro, California
I am a mostly retired Nurse who works enough to pay for a studio and art supplies. I have been making art all my life, with no formal degree-type training, beginning with sewing at an early age. I discovered the JOY of quilting when I realized how much I liked breaking rules and telling stories. Workshops in surface design and art quilting, mentoring and encouragement from quilt artists, discovering the magic of assemblage with found objects, has landed me right in the middle of a mixed media world of art. I have been making my art and keeping it mostly to myself, giving it away only when I felt it was safe to do so. Finally, I was convinced that in order to grow artistically, I had to open up my art world for others to see, to like or not, but to see. Please take a look. Any comments, suggestions are welcome.

Our ATC challenge for January is the color "Verdigris"and I felt more connected to this challenge than last month. Maybe because the holiday stress season is over. Right across from East Bay Depot in Oakland, CA, where I buy a lot of pieces of toss outs and junky stuff for reuse, there was a custom kitchen cabinet store that was out of business but selling odds and ends from their inventory. You could get some pretty cool sinks, counters, cabinets, fixtures, etc. . They also had stacks of 12x12 squares of designer wallpaper that were metallic and embossed. What a find! I bought every one of them and found that the gold ones would be perfect to try some verdigris effects on.

The flattest part of the papers took the stamps OK, though the metallic finish was pretty slick. I tore the paper and used a NeoColor crayon to accent the embossing and torn edges. I wish the metallic paper photographed better, but this is as good as it got.
