Mixed Media Artist

About Me

San Leandro, California
I am a mostly retired Nurse who works enough to pay for a studio and art supplies. I have been making art all my life, with no formal degree-type training, beginning with sewing at an early age. I discovered the JOY of quilting when I realized how much I liked breaking rules and telling stories. Workshops in surface design and art quilting, mentoring and encouragement from quilt artists, discovering the magic of assemblage with found objects, has landed me right in the middle of a mixed media world of art. I have been making my art and keeping it mostly to myself, giving it away only when I felt it was safe to do so. Finally, I was convinced that in order to grow artistically, I had to open up my art world for others to see, to like or not, but to see. Please take a look. Any comments, suggestions are welcome.

Circus Series

The circus theme began as a bag of colorful fabric that was to be incorporated into a challenge quilt for the 2005 Amador Valley Quilt Guild show. The result was a 36"x 28' conglomeration of circus images, fused, glued, and sewn. It is quite frenetic and lacks contrast/negative space or a place to rest one's eyes, but there is not much resting at a three ring circus, is there?

Under the Bigtop 36"x28" $350 Three years and many circus dreams later, I began assembling more circus collages on a smaller scale. The images are digitally printed and machine sewn onto fabrics that have been dyed, painted, stenciled, stamped, etc.

  1. Dear Carol,

WOW!!! What cool work!! Your images are so full of variety and interest, put together in really unconventional ways. Love the energy and colors. Too much pattern is never enough. Esp. like the circus banner hanging style.

    Keep up the good work,
    Linda Laird
